[MEI-L] MEI-based catalogue of Carl Nielsen's works now online

Hi Richard,

first of all: also my congratulations to the launch of the Lost Voices project! Great work.

We did some rendering experiments with VexFlow last year, but as far as I recall we ran into some problems along the way. I definitely would like to try it again now.
Some (just very brief) step-by-step description of your workflow from Sibelius onwards would be nice. Even if we may not be able to have incipits perfectly rendered dynamically yet, we may take some of the first steps already. Batch conversion from Sibelius to MEI could be a good thing, for instance.

Is it VexFlow you are referring to on GitHub? I must admit I often have difficulties finding the right things on GitHub (and Google Code as well...), so if it is not too much trouble, I would be very grateful if you could point out the tools you are referring to.

Best,
Axel

I agree that this new project shows us how we can exploit the great capacity of the MEI header for controlling large copora.

Since it might be of interest to others in the community, I'll add a brief follow up on the incipits and Sibelius: thanks to the efforts of various members of the Du Chemin Lost Voices team (Andrew Hankinson, Raffaele Viglianti, Zoltan Komives, and Micah Walter) we now have the tools and workflow that takes us from Sibelius to MEI and in turn to dynamic rendering of notation in any browser. (The workflows also include methods by which editors can include variant readings without needing to edit the MEI files directly).

There are of course limitations to the rendering, but this might be of use.

The code for all of this is available on GitHub. I can share detailed instructions for editors.

We don't have the resources to build some MEI rendering software ourselves, so we have to wait until something is available elsewhere. The problem is also that the incipits are quite complex, especially the ones for the incidental and orchestral music; as far as I know, there are no MEI tools advanced enough to render them yet. Please correct me if I am wrong - I'd love to know about such tools!

We have some other catalogues in preparation (J.P.E. Hartmann, J.A. Scheibe) and plans for even more (Niels W. Gade and others). Perhaps in some of these future catalogues we will be able to handle MEI incipits.

The notation is very simple, though, so we have written a basic transformation to Lilypond (but very specific, so it's probably not useful for anything else). This allows us to produce both SVG and PDFs on the fly. I will make an announcement on the list when it is published.
