[MEI-L] Beethoven Septet

Dear Salome Obert,

I wonder if you are interested in two very peripheral sources of the Septet, Op. 20, which are in my possession. (I like this piece!)

The first is a manuscript score of Op. 20 that I bought from a London dealer in the 1980s, probably made from the published parts many years before the score itself was published. It was formerly owned by Gottfried Weber (who was incidentally a close friend of his namesake, Carl Maria von Weber), and carries his signature, but the music seems to be in the hand of a different scribe.
G. Weber was a friend of the Darmstadt violinist Louis Schloesser, and the Beethoven score also bears a printed bookplate of the latter’s son, ‘C[arl] W[ilhelm] A[dolph] Schloesser’, who came to England and was an early professor of piano at the newly-founded Royal Academy of Music.
I’ve attached a photo of the title-page with G. Weber’s signature, and the first page of the score. Also, the two pages (95/96) with the cadenza (which ends with the word ‘Volti’, confirming that the score was compiled from the instrumental parts, not copied from a score).

The other one is rather bizarre. It’s the Tema con Variazioni from the Septet, arranged for violin and organ by ‘T. Sanderson’, about whom I have been able to discover nothing at all! I bought this when I was a student in Brighton in about 1967; it might have a local connection, but I have not been able to find this name anywhere.

Let me know if you’d like more photos. The ‘Weber’ score would take a lot of work, as it’s 115 pages of music.

Best wishes (and Hi, Johannes!)

Tim Crawford

Dear community,

My name is Salome and I am working for Beethovens Werkstatt. In the project we are currently encoding Beethoven’s Septett op. 20 (respectively Trio op. 38).
