Dear MEI colleagues,
Since this is my first time posting to this listserv, I thought I would
briefly introduce myself. I'm Francesca Giannetti at Rutgers University—New
Brunswick. I'm a digital humanities librarian with a degree and background
in music performance. My work sits at the intersection of music, digital
humanities, and librarianship. At present, I'm part of a team of scholars
and librarians working to develop a digital research environment for music
called Music Scholarship Online (<https://muso.arts.gla.ac.uk/>). It is in
this capacity that I'm studying the ways that music researchers use musical
genre as an access point in online information systems. I would very much
appreciate it if you could help us by completing the following survey.
Here are the details:
You are invited to participate in a research study, entitled “Musical Genre
and Digital Collections: Some Information Seeking Approaches.” The study is
being conducted by Francesca Giannetti of Rutgers University–New Brunswick,
Alexander Library, 169 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ, 848-932-6097,
francesca.giannetti at rutgers.edu.
The aim of this study is to investigate how users of online music
information systems categorize music. A secondary aim is to examine the
ways in which genre tags may potentially mediate the discovery of scholarly
digital projects in music and their associated datasets and software tools.
Your participation in the study will contribute to a better understanding
of how different music communities interpret and use musical genre as an
access point in online information systems. You must be at least 18 years
old to participate. Completing the survey will take approximately 15
minutes of your time.
The purpose of this study is to develop a holistic model of musical genre
for a specific information resource–Music Scholarship Online (MuSO)–but the
results will be generalizable and extensible to other music information
seeking contexts. Your participation in the study will contribute to a
better understanding of how different music communities interpret and use
musical genre as an access point in online information systems.
I hope that you will be willing to help by participating in this research
study. If you agree to participate, the survey is available at this URL:

Thank you very much for your consideration of this request!
All best,
Francesca Giannetti
