Hi Eleanor,

It's always better to use semantic markup whenever possible. That being said, I don't think it's necessary to have a semantic "tag" for everything, especially when some of those things are visual in nature anyhow.  Of course, that introduces a certain amount of inconsistency - MEI has an element for endings, but not for brackets - but I think it's preferable to an EXPLOSION! of elements.  I certainly hope that no one would ever try to use <line> to draw endings, but that's a chance I'm willing to take.

The same styles of lines can also turn up as first and second endings, so if "line" is divorced from musical semantics, it could in other contexts produce ambiguities.

The exact presentation of editorial markup styles varies from one publisher to another.  We inventoried methods of indicating da capo returns and their (re)starting points once.  When we accumulated 25, we decided to give up on signs and settle for semantic meanings.  In a mark-up language environment, an argument can be made for representing  meaning and leaving refinements to the software.

In starting with Sibelius (or any other notation software) the direction is reversed, and of course the questions change.  So the real question may be how to deal with the idiosyncracies that will inevitably arise.

Thank you for responding. Perhaps it would be helpful if I could give the full context of why I'm asking: The common use of this symbol is, indeed, to signify a ligature, and it's even what it's supposed to be doing in the particular example I posted.

However, I'm looking to translate this score from Sibelius (which is the environment I'm in) to MEI. As such, I don't think I can assume that everywhere a bracket like this occurred it "meant" a ligature, especially given the range of brackets one may encounter in this software:

This is why I hope to use the more generic "line" element to represent this particular graphic, and am looking for a way to represent its start and end points without also giving it any particular meaning.

That said, one of the modifications I hope to work on soon is the translation of common editorial idioms from Sibelius into editorial markup, e.g., assuming notes under a group are ligatures, or assuming that a sharp symbol above the staff is a ficta, and marking it up as such in the MEI. This would be an option that a person would enable when they exported their file to MEI, but for now I'm focusing on just getting the symbols encoded.

Hello all,

I'm looking at the following:

It seems that the best element to use in this case would be 'line'; however, the line element currently does not support durational attributes (@dur, @dur.ges, @tstamp, @tstamp2) or positional (@staff, @layer, @place).

Is there a better element to use for this object, or should a modification be proposed for the schema?
