Subject: [ISMIR-Community] New W3C Music Notation Community Group

Dear ISMIR colleagues,

A new Music Notation Community Group has formed at the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). Membership in the Community Group is free of charge and does not require membership in the W3C. The group's home is at

https://www.w3.org/community/music-notation/

The Music Notation Community Group develops and maintains format and language specifications for notated music used by web, desktop, and mobile applications. The group aims to serve a broad range of users engaging in music-related activities involving notation, and will document these use cases.

The initial task of the Community Group is to maintain and update the MusicXML and SMuFL (Standard Music Font Layout) specifications. The goals are to evolve the specifications to handle new use cases and technologies, including greater use of music notation on the web, while maximizing the existing investment in implementations of the existing MusicXML 3.0 and SMuFL specifications.

MakeMusic and Steinberg have announced today that they are transferring development of the MusicXML format and the SMuFL specification to this W3C Community Group. Daniel Spreadbury of Steinberg, Joe Berkovitz of Hal Leonard / Noteflight, and I are serving as co-chairs.

There is a more detailed discussion about what led to the formation of this group at its new blog:

https://www.w3.org/community/music-notation/2015/07/27/introducing-the-music-notation-community-group/

You can join the group by clicking on the "Join This Group" button at the group's home page. Members of the Community Group do need to set up a free W3C account, and agree to a Contributor License Agreement. If you work on music notation for an organization, please be sure to join on behalf of your organization. The agreement is available at:

https://www.w3.org/community/about/agreements/cla/

This is an exciting day for open standards for music notation, and we are looking forward to the next chapter of music notation standards development at our new organizational home.

Best regards,
Michael
