Hello everyone,

Periodically topics arise on the MusicXML mailing list that I hope subscribers to this list would finding interesting as well. Recently, a thread regarding long-term preservation of musical works began with the question --

> Isn't it time for Congress to initiate a challenge on using XML to preserve
> works of music? This could include works in the public domain and
> protected works that will ultimately end up in the public domain.
> Additionally, all works submitted could be used in research and possibly
> made available during infringement litigation.

I think most of us would agree that this would indeed be a very good thing to do. And I hope that (nearly) all of us would also agree that MEI (the format) is an excellent choice for such an undertaking. Furthermore, I hope that MEI (the organization) can play a role in creating a suitable answer to the question.

So, let's start a conversation here -- What technical or political issues does MEI (the format & the organization) need to address/overcome to make this a reality?

(I believe that someone from the Library of Congress will attend the conference, so I hope this will also lead to some face-to-face discussion in Charlottesville.)

Best wishes,

--
