You'll be very glad to hear that, quoting from Laurent Romary's message of 16 Dec 2011 to TEI-L,

• A new <notatedMusic> element was added to support representation of musical notation within texts in a way compatible with the *existing Music XML standard*.  (emphasis mine)

There's no mention of MEI in the message.
