Hi all,
To facilitate our discussions when we meet in Charlottesville, we need to have to a common set of reference examples. Our assistant, Megan England, will collect your suggestions (or better yet, already scanned images ) and produce a set of images accessible from collab and (we hope) a printed version that we'll distribute in July when everyone arrives.
The goal here is not to produce an exhaustive compendium of notational practice. Instead, I think we need a small sample of notation that you use in your daily work. The focus here should be on quality, not quantity. I hope that we can collect 3 examples from each participant - 2 that represent ordinary notational practice in your area of expertise, and 1 that is atypical, unusual or exceptional. You could say the first 2 examples should be "easy" and the last one "difficult". You can put image files in MEI Resources/Examples/contributed or email citations to me or Megan (mne3w at virginia.edu<mailto:mne3w at virginia.edu>). I think single-page examples will be best. If you provide images, please be sure that they are of print quality, i.e., 300 dpi or better. Public-domain examples are best.
In order to get us started, Eleanor has graciously given permission to use the examples found in CCARH's Musical Information in Musicology and Desktop Publishing. So, I've put a ZIP file containing those examples in the MEI Resources folder in the MEI collab space. I've also put there a list of items found in Burkhart that Megan will begin scanning next week. She will look for public-domain sources where possible.
If you have questions, please let me know.
The meeting time is quickly approaching and we'll need time to assemble the collection, so please don't delay in getting images/citations to us. Help me keep my hair from turning gray so fast. :)
See you in C'ville,
--
