From pdr4h at eservices.virginia.edu Mon Jun 20 23:17:10 2016 From: pdr4h at eservices.virginia.edu (Roland, Perry D. (pdr4h)) Date: Mon, 20 Jun 2016 21:17:10 +0000 Subject: [mei-catalog-ig] MEI 3.0.0 released Message-ID: ** Please circulate widely and forgive any cross-posting. ** The MEI Board is happy to announce the release of version 3.0.0 of the MEI specification and documentary guidelines. The Music Encoding Initiative (MEI) is an international collaborative effort to capture the semantics of music notation documents as machine-readable data. Participants in MEI include libraries, universities, companies, and individual researchers from around the world. For more information about MEI, please visit www.music-encoding.org. Highlights of this release include: * association of MEI elements with external code lists, such as Standard Music Font Layout (SMuFL); * expanded metadata capabilities, such as the inclusion of non-MEI metadata formats; * improved representation of typographic details; * description of MEI components using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG); and * revision of the MEI Guidelines and Data Dictionary (formerly known as the "Tag Library"). To see all of the changes made for this revision, please visit the main Music Encoding Initiative Git repository [1], the Encoding Tools repository [2], and the Sample Encodings repository [3]. The source files, schemata, and guidelines for this release are available from the main Music Encoding Initiative Git repository [4]. Browse-able [5] and printable [6] versions of the Guidelines and Data Dictionary are available from the MEI web site, as are plain text versions of the RNG schemata [7]. The mei21to30 XSLT style sheet, available from the Encoding Tools repository, may be used to convert MEI instances from the previous version (2.1.1, aka MEI2013) to version 3.0.0. Many thanks to everyone who participated in the revision process. Without a great deal of teamwork, an undertaking of this magnitude would not be possible. Of course, any remaining errors are the sole responsibility of the editors. First, Irmlind Capelle and Kristina Richts gave a presentation of the Detmold Court Theatre Project (http://www.hoftheater-detmold.de). The project aims at providing a multifaceted view of this particular institution through a rich collection of TEI- and MEI-encoded documents and other data. The encoded documents not only include performance material encoded at metadata level but also a variety of text documents such as programs, cast lists and other archival material. To provide information on the many - also lesser known - persons mentioned, a local authority file is created during the project; at the end of the project, these authority data will also be submitted to public authority files such as GND and VIAF. Axel Geertinger presented some of the new features implemented in the MerMEId metadata editor since last year. These included improved customizability (of the xsl and css used for the HTML output, for instance), linking to authority files, incipit rendering with Verovio, and outputting all or multiple documents as a single document for printing. We had a look at the schema changes in MEI 3.0.0 and also discussed a few potential proposals for future changes. The latter will have to be discussed on the IG's mailing list, of course. Finally we talked about the document discussing some of the concepts and approaches for using MEI for catalogs, which we decided to produce last year in Florence. A first draft of the text is available from GoogleDocs: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cF0M57ddL6_WzhEyigCC1l1MMda8Yr1-GB_atJEIOTI/edit?usp=sharing. We hope to be able to present a more final document to the general MEI community next year. Please feel free to read/ask/comment/contribute!
