<div dir="ltr"><div style="font-size:small">Re: n|e|s|w etc. as a value of @tilt for the S-shape, is there another way of indicating whether the shape is oriented vertically (like a normal looking S) or horizontally? Then we could look at describing the shape, in those two orientations. I'm pretty sure that difference is crucial, though. </span></div><div style="font-size:small"><span style="color:rgb(33,33,33);font-size:13px"><br></span></div><div style="font-size:small"><span style="color:rgb(33,33,33);font-size:13px">Thanks,</span></div><div style="font-size:small"><span style="color:rgb(33,33,33);font-size:13px">K</span></div></div><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr">On Sun, 15 Oct 2017 at 04:58 Andrew Hankinson <<a href="mailto:andrew.hankinson@mail.mcgill.ca">andrew.hankinson@mail.mcgill.ca</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex">Attribute: @s-shaped {n|e|s|w) (north, east, south, west; the direction of the initial long stroke, i.e., the standard letter S is “w”, its mirror shape is “e”, the letter turned 90-degrees on its side is “s”, and its mirror shape is “n”)<br>

(As a matter of style, MEI adopts a camel-case method for naming its attributes, so this would be @sShaped)<br>
<br>
This is problematic. If a line is written such that is not aligned perpendicular to the page edges, or it curves, or the page edges are not 90°) then from what baseline should the directional reference be?<br>
<br>
It is imperative to remember that this will be used to encode the music notation, not describe the shapes on a page.<br>
<br>
I would strongly suggest this be dropped, and another method of encoding the same information be developed.<br>
