The "blank" portions of the staff can filled with "space" using the <space> element, like so --<br>

The @compressable attribute is a potential signal to a processor to leave the empty space intact. I'm not sure that Verovio supports this yet, but it's a good idea to use it.<br>

But, this is as far as I'm willing to go towards a "diplomatic transcription", as the methods of handling this kind of situation become processor dependent very quickly. The best practice is to stick to encoding the semantics of the notation and refer to an image for spatial details. Using the coordinates of the bounding boxes of the systems, one can demonstrate that they have the same horizontal dimensions.<br>
