<pre wrap="">Axel,
I couldn't agree more with what you said, especially about the distinction between developers and users. I think this is the opportunity to shape MEI so that it becomes more user-friendly, and to make it as accessible and open for anyone as possible. From this perspective, it's terrific that Giuliano and David have joined the group. Without knowing the exact group, I hope that others with a less-developed background in digital projects will join the group – it seems important to get input from traditional musicologists, librarians etc. as well.
Benni: Thanks for driving this :-) I assume you will announce the availability of this mailing list as soon as it's there, right?
Best regards,
Johannes

<pre wrap="">Benni,
I agree. I think the discussions should be open to anyone interested, but on the other hand I don't think we should flood MEI-L with our discussions. I am sure there will be a lot of mails about purely practical matters, for instance about coordinating the group's work, which will not be of interest to anyone else. I do not want to hide these mails from anyone, but I do want to avoid people leaving MEI-L because their inbox gets filled with mails addressing (primarily) a small group. It's like choosing between having a meeting in a train or in a meeting room. In the train, people are gathered because they want to get somewhere, but they are not necessarily going there for the same reason. They probably do not want to hear a group's discussions about the train company. In a meeting room, we can invite people to join the meeting if they want to; otherwise, they can just pass by. One could even ask what the point would be in appointing a structure development group if all discussions a
re to take place in the community at large. But of course we must be in close contact to MEI-L too as you suggest, and the group's discussions should be accessible in an open archive.
I'm happy to welcome Dave and Giuliano to the group! And Giuliano, no need to apalogize - I think it is most valuable also people not too deeply involved in the development so far are represented; after all, the discussions are also about how to ensure openness towards the general public, MEI users, and future MEI developers. For now, the group of MEI users may be more or less identical to the group of MEI developers. Hopefully, that is going to change in the future, and there will be far more users than people involved in the current council. In my opinion, this makes it even more important to have the existing and rather large group of people actively contributing to the development of MEI (the current council + some more) organized somehow also in the future structure of the MEI community - as an advisory board or whatever. As I see it, this group is an essential resource and driving force for MEI development, contributing with code, ideas, bug reports, guidelines, trying out con
cepts, spreading the word etc. Users are something different.
Well, that's part of the discussion already. If we agree to have a separate mei-strat mailing list, please do join it if you want to participate in - or just follow - the discussions.
Best,
Axel

Emne: Re: [MEI-L] CfP MEI Strategy Development Group
Dear Peter,
thanks for your concerns regarding a separate list for the Structure Development Group.
Of course, discussion of the Structure Development Group should be as open and transparent as possible!
My first (1) thoughts for a separate mailinglist were that it would make it easier to keep together the discussion of the group; second (2), being appointed with the task of making up a couple of possible models for community organisation I think it is easier to have the possibility to develop these models to a certain degree, before prensenting them for public discussion.
Third (3) this mailinglist would provide everybody with the possibility to directly address the whole Structure Development Group and fourth (4), being most important, avoid mails between group members to end in personal mail accounts, later forgotten and unavailable to the public by providing an archive of the mailinglist.
My idea with this was to have only those wiling to participate in the group's work as members of the list but allow (moderated) input from anybody.
Of course this would mean, an open list archive and regular reports to MEI-L on behalf of the Structure Development Group; and, of course, open discussion and (as I could imagine) surveys on MEI-L in order to grasp "waht does MEI want?"
But for now I can calm everyone: nothing has been mingled on dark secluded mailinlists ;-) In fact, while making up a preliminary agenda for MEI-Struct during the past few days, a couple of mails reached me, concerning the groups work.
>From the fact that these reached me by means of personal mail accounts (not over MEI-L) tells me, that there might be an interest in forwarding ideas and fist thoughts on a personal basis first!
I'd be happy to hear other opinions on the above? (Especially from contributors to the new Structure Development Group!)
Now to give a short report on current status:
I'm happy to announce that two additional community members have joined the Structure Development Group:
David Meredith, and
Giuliano Di Bacco
Best wishes,
Benjamin

<pre wrap="">Hi, Benjamin,
You are starting out with a good steering group. Perhaps you should
mail out small parts of the agenda to a large group and see what
responses come in. Or...you could identify several topics that need
to be addressed and put them in a survey.
I'll be happy to read what you come up with, but I doubt I will be
able to take an active part in drafting the provisions. Good luck with the task.

Subject: [MEI-L] CfP MEI Strategy Development Group
Dear List:eners,
as mentioned before, in my personal report from the MEI Council
Meeting at Mainz, MEI has to find new structures for future
community development and participation.
Having proposed to initialize formation of this group I hereby
invite everyone to join the efforts of
</pre>
<blockquote type="cite">
<pre wrap="">A *Strategy Development Group*
assigned to come up with proposals for a new organization of MEI.
This group should represent the complete MEI Community, including
delegates from peer groups that might not be involved at the
moment. For this reason, it was proposed to use MEI-L to gather
interested parties for this basically open group.
For practical reasons, an initial group of volunteers was set up,
which consists of:
- Axel Teich Geertinger,
- Laurent Pugin, (@Laurent: as you were proposed while shortly
absent, is this your will?)
- Christine Siegert, and
- Benjamin W. Bohl.
**Call for Participation** Anyone interested in joining this group
please communicate this by replying to this message via MEI-L.
If there are no objections I would like to volunteer for
coordinating the formation of this group during this initial phase.
The preliminary schedule for this group is to draft at least two
proposals for future organization of the MEI Community within the
next year; bringing these proposals to discussion both in MEI
Council and MEI Community, for decision.
It was agreed, that transparency and avoidance of bureaucratic
overhead should be essential features of new structures, and
democracy and participatory aspects should be considered likewise,
but without neglecting efficient and simple structures. This might
include careful reconsideration of the current structures (MEI
Council and MEI Technical Team) that nevertheless have proved to be
very helpful and effective fostering the interest of MEI Community
and bringing it to ist current shape.
It was also agreed that once new structures and forms of organizing
MEI Community should be established, these would be examined after
a number of years, with the option to revert or change to a
different

<pre wrap="">model.
If you are interested in joining this group and developing
strategies for the future of MEI, please contact me directly. A
Mailinglist for internal discussions of this group will be available
shortly and I'd be happy to send you an invitation to the list.
Best regards,
Benjamin
