Hi Kristina,<div><br></div><div>I agree with Perry. I very much prefer to deal with any element that spans multiple events and measures at the bottom of the measure where they start. It avoids all sorts of overlapping hierarchies. I mainly mean <slur> and <hairpin>, but also <trill>, <tie>, <tuplet>, etc. <beam> is perhaps my only exception to this rule.</div>
<div><br></div><div>I typically use time stamp and/or ids (in this order or preference) to anchor them to the relevant events or position in time. I believe this is really efficient, especially when you're dealing with manuscript notation and editorial intervention, as it leaves room for those elements.</div>

<p>MEI is not designed to be encoded in one pass -- some things, such as trills, pedal markings, text directives, etc., must be captured after the notes.</p>

<p>It might be possible to do what you suggest in some cases but it won't work all the time because it potentially leads to overlapping hierarchies. It also means that your proposed <trill> element would have to allow every other possible element, leading
to opportunities for encoders to do unsupported things.</p>
